Moving Etsy products to eBay and other platforms

Hundreds of ready-made Etsy listings can reach new buyers on eBay and other platforms. But title length, variation limits and policy differences make copy and paste impossible. Here are the steps for a clean transfer.

If you have a working Etsy shop, you already have a product catalog that can sell on other platforms too. Selling the same designs on eBay, your Shopify store or Amazon frees your sales from depending on a single marketplace's algorithm and policies. A policy change on Etsy or a shift in its search ranking hits a single-channel shop directly.

But copying an Etsy listing to another platform as is rarely works. Every platform has a different title length, variation structure, category system and content policies. In this article we cover the differences to watch for, especially when moving from Etsy to eBay, using the rules in effect as of September 2026.

The key differences between Etsy and eBay

FieldEtsyeBay
Title lengthUp to 140 charactersUp to 80 characters
Tags13 tags, each up to 20 charactersNo tags; required or recommended item specifics depending on category
Variation limitIts own variation structureUp to 250 variations per listing; 5 variation details, each with up to 50 values
Listing fee$0.20, valid for 4 monthsFree for up to 250 listings a month, then $0.35 per listing (most categories)
Selling fee6.5% transaction + payment processing feeIn most categories 13.6% of the sale amount + $0.30 per order ($10 or less) or $0.40

The practical takeaway: you need to shorten your Etsy title for eBay, item specifics take the place of tags, and multi-color, multi-size t-shirts can exceed eBay's variation limit.

The variation limit: products over 250

Picture a t-shirt: 20 colors and 7 sizes (S through 3XL) make 140 combinations. Add a product type option like “t-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie” and the count quickly passes 250. Since eBay allows at most 250 variations per listing, this product can't be published on eBay as a single listing.

The solution is to split the product into logical parts: for example, separate listings by product type (t-shirt, sweatshirt) or by color group. Doing this split by hand takes time and risks breaking SKU mapping.

Policy differences: what can trip you up on eBay?

eBay's intellectual property policy explicitly lists t-shirts printed with a third party's photo, slightly altered brand names and third-party logos added to listing images as examples of infringement. There's no guarantee that a listing that has sat on Etsy for a long time without a report will be fine on eBay. Reviewing every product against eBay's rules before transferring protects your account and heads off reports in the first months.

eBay also applies extra fees tied to its performance standards: if your account is rated “Below Standard” for the US, an additional 6% is added to the final value fee on the following month's sales. That makes shipping on time and matching the description especially important on eBay for the products you transfer.

Transferring step by step

  1. Clean up the source: before transferring, weed out Etsy listings that carry copyright risk, are out of stock or that you no longer want to sell.
  2. Adapt titles: cut the 140-character Etsy title down to 80 characters, moving the most important words to the front.
  3. Fill in item specifics: move the information you conveyed in tags into eBay's category-specific item specifics (brand, size type, material, style, etc.).
  4. Check variations: split products over 250 and keep SKUs intact in every part.
  5. Transfer as drafts: instead of publishing directly, create products as drafts first and check a sample.
  6. Approve and publish: publish the drafts you have checked in bulk.
  7. Test the order flow: confirm that the first order reaches the producer with the right product, color and size.

Transferring to Shopify and Amazon

Shopify

On Shopify you run your own store: you have more freedom over titles, descriptions and variation structure, but you have to bring the traffic yourself. As of September 2026, Shopify's Basic plan is $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month billed yearly; card processing fees start at 2.9% + 30 cents. Moving your Etsy products to Shopify is a fast way to build a sales channel under your own brand.

Amazon

Amazon's category and product attribute system is its own; in apparel, the referral fee is tiered by sale price (as of September 2026: 5% for $15 and under, 10% for $15-20, 17% above $20). When transferring to Amazon, category selection and product attributes need to be filled in carefully.

In Custombull, your Amazon store connects to the same dashboard as your other channels; sales and order data are shown together, and product transfer works the same way for Amazon: drafts first, published with approval, SKUs preserved, variations adjusted to each channel's rules.

Images and descriptions: small differences per channel

Beyond titles and variations, images and descriptions need adapting too. On Etsy, the first photo is the thumbnail shown in search, and lifestyle mockups work well. On eBay, buyers want to see the product itself clearly; you can add separate photos for each variation (eBay allows 24 photos per variation).

Match each channel's voice in descriptions as well. Phrases like “handmade with love”, common in Etsy descriptions, are misleading for a POD product and meaningless on other channels. Fabric, fit, print method, care instructions and a size chart are useful on every channel.

A short pre-transfer checklist

  • Does the title fit the target channel's character limit?
  • Does the number of variations exceed the target channel's limit, and if so, how will it be split?
  • Are the SKUs the same as in the source?
  • Is there a brand, character or third-party logo in the design, title or description?
  • Have the category and required item specifics been selected?
  • Has the price been recalculated for the target channel's fee structure?

After the transfer: keeping things in sync

Transferring products once is only half the job. After that, a change you make on one channel (price, stock, color options) needs to reach the others. Otherwise a color you removed on Etsy keeps selling on eBay, an order comes in, and it can't be printed.

In Custombull, orders from all connected channels come into one dashboard; color and size templates work across all channels; copyright checks and product photos are prepared for every channel. A change you make in one place carries over to your other channels once you approve it. More than 22,000 products are currently on sale with Custombull on Shopify, Etsy and eBay. TikTok Shop and Walmart connections are in early access, and Turkish marketplaces such as Trendyol and Hepsiburada are coming soon.

Frequently asked questions

Is it against the rules to sell the same product on both Etsy and eBay?

No. You can sell the same design on more than one channel. What matters is following each platform's own content and intellectual property rules and making sure orders are fulfilled with the right product.

What happens to my Etsy tags on eBay?

eBay has no tag field. You need to spread the information from your tags across the title and the category-specific item specifics.

Does anything happen to my Etsy listing during the transfer?

In Custombull, a transfer works as a copy: your Etsy listing stays where it is, a draft is created on the target channel first, and it is published when you approve it.

How should I cut the title down to 80 characters?

Etsy titles usually list the product name, audience, gift intent and design theme separated by commas. For eBay, put the product type and the most distinctive feature first, and move gift and seasonal phrases to item specifics or the description. For example, “Scuba Diving Cat Dad Shirt, Funny Diver Gift for Cat Lovers” could become something under 80 characters on eBay like “Scuba Diving Cat Dad T-Shirt Funny Diver Gift Unisex Cotton Tee”.

Is eBay's free listing allowance enough?

eBay charges no listing fee for up to 250 listings a month; an eBay Store subscription raises that number. If you are transferring hundreds of products in the same month, plan which ones to publish first around that limit.

Where are orders managed?

Orders from all connected channels are collected in the Custombull dashboard; orders from the same customer can be combined into one package, and every order gets its own tracking page.
