Apparel listings on eBay: variation rules and item specifics
eBay has no tags; you get found through the right category, complete item specifics and a compliant variation structure. We cover the rules for placing a multicolor t-shirt correctly on eBay.
Whether a t-shirt shows up in eBay search depends not on tags like on Etsy, but on the title, category and item specifics. eBay buyers use filters often: size, color, brand, fit. A listing that leaves the fields behind these filters empty never appears for a buyer who applies them.
In this post we cover the variation rules on eBay's official help pages as of September 2026 and how to fill in item specifics for an apparel listing, using a POD t-shirt as an example.
Title: what to say in 80 characters
An eBay title can be up to 80 characters. You can't carry over a 140-character Etsy title as is; you need to put the most important information first. The order that works for apparel: product type, design theme, audience, fit or material.
- Etsy title: “Scuba Diving Cat Dad Shirt, Funny Diver Gift for Cat Lovers, Ocean Lover Tee”
- eBay title: “Scuba Diving Cat Dad T-Shirt Funny Diver Gift Unisex Cotton Tee” (64 characters)
- Move some of the gift and seasonal phrases into the description and item specifics.
- Don't use all-caps words, strings of symbols or attention grabbers like “L@@K”.
Variation rules
You can sell a t-shirt with colors and sizes on eBay as a single listing with variations. A listing with variations adds no extra fee; in fact, using one listing instead of separate listings for similar products saves you insertion fees.
| Rule | What eBay says |
|---|---|
| Number of variations | Up to 250 variations in a single listing |
| Variation details | Up to 5 variation details per listing (e.g. color, size, style) |
| Number of values | Up to 50 values per detail |
| Price and quantity | Each variation can have its own price and quantity |
| Photos | Up to 24 photos per variation |
| Extra fee | No extra listing fee for variations |
Keep SKUs intact when splitting variations
The most common mistake when splitting variations is regenerating SKUs. The SKU is the code that tells the producer which product, color and size an order belongs to. If the SKU changes during the split, an order from eBay may be matched to the wrong product or not matched at all.
On Custombull, SKUs are preserved when products are transferred to eBay, and products with more than 250 color/size options are split automatically according to eBay's rule. Products that may run into eBay's rules are flagged separately, so you decide before publishing.
Item specifics: eBay's answer to tags
Item specifics are fields that describe a product's attributes, such as brand, size, color and style, in a structured way. eBay splits them into three groups: Required, Required soon and Recommended. On the active listings screen in Seller Hub, you can filter for listings with missing item specifics.
According to eBay, item specifics increase visibility both in eBay search and on external sites like Google Shopping. Recommended fields are based on the filters and searches buyers use most, so don't settle for only the required fields.
Example item specifics for a t-shirt
| Field | Example value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | Your store brand | If you don't have your own brand, use the appropriate option offered in the category |
| Size Type | Regular | Size type |
| Size | As variations: S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL | As a variation detail |
| Color | As variations: Black, Navy, Sport Grey | As a variation detail |
| Department | Such as Men or Women | The fitting option from the values offered in the category |
| Type | T-Shirt | Product type |
| Style | Graphic Tee | Style |
| Sleeve Length | Short Sleeve | Sleeve length |
| Neckline | Crew Neck | Neckline |
| Material | Cotton | Based on the blank model's actual fabric |
| Theme | Animals, Sports | Design theme |
| Character / Character Family | Leave blank | Don't fill in this field if there's no licensed character |
Required fields vary by category, and eBay makes new fields required from time to time. When you see a “Required soon” label on a field while creating a listing, fill it in right away.
Photos and description
eBay buyers want to see the product itself clearly. Linking each color variation to a photo of that color lets buyers see the color they picked and reduces item-not-as-described complaints. Add the size chart as an image too.
In the description, include the fabric, fit, print method, washing instructions and production and shipping time. Phrases common in Etsy descriptions, such as “handmade”, are misleading for a POD product; remove them when moving to eBay.
Custombull's AI product photos turn your design into sale-ready images; 5 photos for 3 credits. The same images are prepared for all your channels.
Policy: what gets you in trouble on eBay?
eBay's intellectual property policy lists t-shirts printed with third-party photos, slightly altered brand names and other brands' logos added to listing images as examples of violations. Entering a brand or character name in item specifics that the product doesn't actually carry also falls under this.
Custombull's copyright check compares your design and title against known brands and characters and tells you why something is risky; 1 credit per product.
Pre-publish checklist
- Is the title under 80 characters with the product type first?
- Is the correct category selected?
- Are the required and recommended item specifics filled in?
- Is the number of variations under 250 and the number of values per detail under 50?
- Does every variation have a unique SKU that matches the SKU at the source?
- Is a photo linked to each color, and is a size chart included?
- Is there a brand or character name in the design, title or item specifics?
Frequently asked questions
Should I create a separate listing for each color?
Usually not. If you stay within the 250-variation limit, offering colors and sizes as variations in one listing is easier for buyers and protects your free listing allowance.
Can I use different prices for variations?
Yes. eBay lets you set a separate price and quantity for each variation. Pricing higher-cost sizes like 2XL and 3XL higher is common practice.
