How to create DST embroidery files for Etsy

An embroidery download should give a buyer a tested stitch file and enough information to use it. Creating the DST is one step; confirming artwork rights, preparing each size and describing the download clearly are equally necessary. Custombull is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Etsy.

Check the artwork license before digitizing

Start with artwork you created, or a license that covers the precise use you intend. Permission to put an illustration on a physical shirt may not permit reselling a downloadable stitch file. Check digital resale, modification and distribution permissions separately. Brand names, characters and logos can raise trademark or other rights questions even when an image is easy to download.

The seller remains responsible for permissions and marketplace eligibility. Automatic conversion does not certify an image as original, clear copyright or establish that a listing meets Etsy’s current creativity and seller requirements.

Create and test each advertised size

  1. Prepare a clean, flat-color PNG, JPG or WebP.
  2. Set the finished size and a suitable fabric preset in the image-to-DST tool.
  3. Review the stitch preview, actual stitched area, stitch count and thread sequence.
  4. Download the DST, PNG preview and text notes.
  5. Sew a sample on the intended fabric and backing. Correct the artwork or seek professional manual digitizing if the result needs work.

Generate and test each size you intend to offer. Avoid promising arbitrary resizing: a stitch program planned for one size can behave differently when scaled. A preview is useful for inspection, but is not a photograph of a physical sew-out.

Package a clear digital download

Use Download all (ZIP) in the tool to collect the DST, mockup PNG, thread notes, design information and production checklist in one download. Rename the package clearly for your listing. For example, use a folder for each tested size and name files with the design, format and dimensions. Include a short README explaining what is included, which sizes were tested, how to assign thread colors and that the buyer needs an embroidery machine supporting DST.

Etsy’s digital listing help currently allows up to five attached files, each no larger than 20 MB, and lists ZIP among supported uploads. DST is not listed as a direct attachment type there, so package it in a supported ZIP. Check the current official Etsy digital download requirements before publishing.

Describe exactly what the buyer receives

Use a truthful title describing the design, format and useful attributes. Avoid repeating unrelated keywords or naming brands you are not authorized to use. A clear listing helps buyers decide whether the download suits their machine and project.

Keep evidence and provide practical support

Keep the source artwork, license records, tested files and sew-out notes with your design project. If a buyer reports a problem, ask for the machine, hoop, fabric, stabilizer and the exact file size used. These details are more useful than telling the buyer to resize a DST until it appears to fit.

For complex designs, small lettering or specialist stitching, a professional digitizer may need to prepare or revise the design. The automatic tool currently makes flat-fill DST, not a complete multi-format professional embroidery bundle.
